Australia records five-wicket win over Zimbabwe in first ODI in Townsville

Australia records five-wicket overcame Zimbabwe by five wickets in their inaugural ODI in Townsville, with Cameron Green picking up a five-wicket haul and David Warner and Steve Smith also shining with the bat.

On Sunday, after Australian captain Aaron Finch had sent Zimbabwe in, Green was the standout bowler as the visitors were dismissed for 200 runs (5-33 from nine overs).

The all-rounder took out Zimbabwe captain Regis Chakabva (31) and Sikander Raza (5) early on before returning to clean up the back end.

Australia records five-wicket

Green had only previously taken one ODI wicket for Australia, while Raza had scored three hundred in his previous six innings.

For the visitors, Wessly Madhevere scored a career-high 72 points, and Tadiwanashe Marumani added 45.

Madhavere was caught and bowled by Adam Zampa (3-57) with the final delivery of his 10-over stint.

After Finch chopped on in the ninth over for 15, Warner established the tone for the Australian innings with a brilliant 57 from 66 balls.

Smith, who scored an unbroken 48 from 80 balls at number three, provided Warner with strong assistance as Alex Carey (10), Mitch Marsh (2), and Marcus Stoinis (19) all succumbed to cheap spin at the other end.

Ryan Burl (3-60), a leg spinner, took three wickets as Zimbabwe temporarily gained momentum, but Australia easily won because to Glenn Maxwell’s hard-hitting 32 from nine deliveries.

Prior to the World Cup in India in 2019, Australia won its first of 17 ODIs thanks to back-to-back sixes from Maxwell.

On Wednesday in Townsville, the second game of the best-of-three series will take place.

Ryan Burl (3-60), a leg spinner, took three wickets as Zimbabwe temporarily gained momentum, but Australia easily won because to Glenn Maxwell’s hard-hitting 32 from nine deliveries.
