The Golden State Warriors will face the Washington Wizards in two preseason games in Japan in 2022 as part of the NBA Japan Games 2022. The league announced today that it would be sponsored by Rakuten. The Warriors and Wizards will meet at Saitama Super Arena on Friday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 2, marking both teams’ first visits to Japan and the 15th and 16th NBA games in the nation, respectively.

The NBA announced on Tuesday, March 15 that the Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards will play a pair of preseason games in Japan before the 2022-23 season.

The Warriors, led by two-time MVP Stephen Curry, and the Wizards, led by Rui Hachimura, will face off at Saitama Super Arena on September 30 and October 2.

The announcement was made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Rakuten Group, Inc. Chairman and CEO Mickey Mikitani, and NBA Asia managing director Scott Levy. Mikitani held a press conference in Tokyo, and NBA officials attended via live video conference.

“We’re thrilled to provide preseason games to our Japanese fans one more,” Silver stated. “There is a lot of excitement in the nation about NBA basketball, and we appreciate Mickey and Rakuten’s continuous efforts to help the sport flourish.”

The news was released before the Warriors’ game against the Wizards on Monday night (California time). Golden State won by a score of 118-111. Curry scored 47 points to lead all scorers. Hachimura scored a game-high 12 points.

“As a member of the Washington Wizards, I’m really excited to play in Japan,” Hachimura said. “I’ll keep working hard to bring Japanese basketball back to life.”

The NBA’s intentions to resume overseas travel, Silver said, are “a indication that we are moving back to a more regular way of life,” citing travel limitations imposed by the worldwide epidemic.

Curry shared his excitement at the possibility to play in Japan in a video message.

Will this be the Warriors’ and Wizards’ first trip to Japan?
