2022 marks the first International Friendship Day, which is observed on July 30 each year. Understand the day’s origins and history completely.
International Friendship Day 2022: If your parents are your first teachers, friends are your travelling companions who help you find your way down the less-traveled and new routes of life. When things don’t look good, a buddy helps us believe in ourselves and rescues us from our lowest point. It seems sense that many people prioritise their friendships over finding their “ideal partner,” who may or may not even exist. There are likely too many friends for one day to be devoted to them, hence various friendship days are observed on various days throughout the world.
Date
Annually on July 30, the World Friendship Crusade, an international civic organisation that works to promote a culture of peace through friendship, suggested the idea for International Friendship Day. The United Nations General Assembly officially declared that day to be International Day of Friendship in 2011.
The first Sunday in August is also Friendship Day in several other nations, including India. It falls on August 7, 2022, this year.
History
The idea for the first-ever friendship day may have been developed even before the World Friendship Crusade. The Greeting Card National Association tried to promote the concept of a Friendship Day in the 1920s to boost sales of their greeting cards, but at the time, people were not ready to buy it and thought it was a gimmick. The first internationally recognised National Friendship Day was established on August 2 by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, Inc., but it too faded away over time.
Who would have thought that this idea would find such a large following years later? Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho first introduced the idea of a Global Friendship Day on July 20, 1958, while dining out with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town in Paraguay. The World Friendship Crusade was founded at that gathering.
Significance
International Day of Friendship, in accordance with the UN, can aid in fostering world peace and social harmony. “Poverty, violence, and violations of human rights are only a few of the difficulties, crises, and dividing factors that threaten global peace, security, development, and social harmony. Promoting and upholding a common spirit of human solidarity, which manifests in many different ways, the most basic of which is friendship, is necessary to address the core causes of those crises and challenges. Weaving a safety net that will protect us all, inspiring desire for a better world where everyone is united for the greater good, and contributing to the fundamental transformations that are urgently required to achieve sustainable stability are all possible through friendship “based on the UN.
Celebrations in different countries
In Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela, Finland, Estonia, and the Dominican Republic, Friendship Day is observed on February 14, the same day as Valentine’s Day, primarily by single people who have not yet found a mate. While Friendship Day is commemorated on April 16 in South Africa, it is celebrated on June 9 in Ukraine. The day is also observed on various dates all across the world.
