The movies are intended to represent Tom’s character’s send-off and the series’ “culmination,” according to a Variety article. Director Christopher responded to a question about it by saying,

“Let me tell you, I’ve been working with Tom Cruise for 15 years and I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve been standing next to the man, witnessed an event, and then read about it in the trades the next day and none of what they describe is actually true.”

Christopher continued, “People with a ‘agenda’ are spreading these rumours.” Put the fictitious word “The Agenda Is” in front of the headline when reading articles in the trades. Someone is putting it out there for a reason when you read “anonymous sources” or “sources close to the production say,” he explained.
